The Assistant Accountant - Operating Costs & Overheads role at Sedgwick is a pivotal position within the finance team, focused on managing and reporting the company's operating costs and overheads. Based in London and reporting to the Finance Manager, this role offers the opportunity to work closely with various departments across the business, contributing to the accuracy and insightfulness of financial reporting.
The role involves taking ownership of key cost areas such as marketing, travel and entertainment, recruitment, legal, professional fees, and IT. You'll play a central part in the month-end reporting process, identifying risks and opportunities, and communicating these to the wider finance team. A key aspect of the role is preparing and distributing cost reports that provide meaningful analysis and support decision-making across the business.
You'll also collaborate with Sedgwick's offshore service provider to ensure timely and accurate processing of balance sheet reconciliations, journal postings, and ad-hoc reclassifications. Managing accruals and prepayment schedules will be part of your responsibilities, along with maintaining robust financial controls and recommending process improvements where needed.
This is a hands-on role that offers exposure to a fast-paced, private equity-backed business environment, with opportunities to gain insight into the insurance services sector. The position requires a minimum of two days per week in the London office and may occasionally involve travel to other Sedgwick locations.
The skills you will have when you apply:
- Finance experience: Knowledge and hands-on experience in month-end processes, journal posting, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Professional ambition: A desire to start or continue development towards a professional qualification (ACCA, CIMA, ACA or equivalent).
- System knowledge: Minimum skill level in Excel including the ability to use Pivot Tables and VLOOKUP functions confidently. Familiarity with SAP Hana is desirable.
- Communication skills: Ability to tailor communication effectively across different stakeholder levels and backgrounds.
- Initiative and independence: A self-starter who can work autonomously and seeks continuous improvement.
- Curiosity and enthusiasm: A natural interest in understanding the business and making the role their own.
- Time management: Strong ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.
